Incentive to Quit Smoking

The key to quitting smoking is motivation.

There has to be something more important to you than picking up that next cigarette.

The reasons for quitting are as numerous and various as the smokers who want to quit.

There's a story about a young monk who told his master that he wanted to see God. The master walked him out into the river and held his head under the water. The young monk thrashed about and finally struggled up for air. "Why did you do that?" he gasped. The master said "When you want to see God that badly, you will see him."

It's the same with smoking. When you want to quit that badly, you can do it.

  • For many, being diagnosed with a terrible illness is the ultimate motivation. Unfortunately, all too often, it's too late..

  • Many parents are touched by their children's pleas for them to quit. The children have been taught the truth about smoking and secondhand smoke and they're very frightened for their parents and for themselves when they see their parents smoking.

  • Sometimes ignored requests for a smoke-free household turn to threats of divorce and the incentive to quit takes a giant leap.
  • For one prospective grandmother, the thought of being deprived of the chance to help take care of her daughter's newborn baby gave her the incentive she needed.

  • Realizing that they are robbing their family of money needed for education and other necessities is enough to turn the tide.

  • A friend who is an excellent artist sells his beautiful, delicate pencil drawings for a lot of money. He was also a smoker who worried about the health risks and had tried to quit many times, but failed each time. He would stay up into the wee hours, drawing and smoking cigarettes. One sultry summer evening he noticed a little speck on his drawing and tried to brush it off, but it was wet, and it streaked. His beautiful drawing was ruined. He pulled out a fresh sheet of paper and started again, and again the speck and the streak. His hours of work went down the tubes.

After several more aborted attempts, he finally figured out that the smoke from his cigarettes was hanging in the air over his drawing table, and the air was so humid that the smoke was condensing and little beads of condensed tobacco smoke were dropping onto his drawings. He was furious!

The health hazards weren't enough to make him quit, but the droplets of his cigarettes' vapor on his drawings put him over the edge! He threw his cigarettes into the trash can, and hasn't had a cigarette since.

    It's different for everyone.

What will it be for you?

If you can't get motivated for yourself (often the case because smokers tend to suffer from a lack of confidence and low self-esteem), please remember that your family loves you. If you can't quit for yourself, do it for them.

It's tearing them up to watch you destroying yourself...

In fact, we all quit sooner or later...either by choice or by death. Why not do it now, on your own terms, before the choice is made for you...and the terms are disastrous.

While there are many products and services offering help for quitting, I have no experience with them. My area of expertise is counter-advertising and prevention, and personally, I quit "cold turkey" when I learned that I was pregnant with my first child years ago. Most of the people I know who quit successfully, did it the same way. (except for the pregnant part)

When you're "gasping for air" and ready to quit, www.WhyQuit.com offers lots of incentive, educational material, and on-line support for "quitting Cold Turkey".
