Go Smoke-free!

Withdrawal Symptoms and Activities That

Might Help*

Banana researchers have shown that bananas can help people give up smoking because of their high levels of vitamin C, A1, B6, and B2, as well as potassium and magnesium.

SYMPTOM ACTIVITY
Dry mouth; sore throat, gums, or tongue

Sip ice-cold water or fruit juice, or chew gum. Swish with warm salt water. If the problem persists, you can try a tablet by Natrol called "Dry Mouth Relief" and a spray called called "Dry Mouth Spray" by Thayer .

Headaches Take a warm bath or shower. Try relaxation or meditation techniques. Massage the muscle in the "web" between your thumb and forefinger. The muscle will be tight and tender. Massage or press until the muscle is no longer tender and the headace will probably be gone.
Trouble sleeping Don't drink coffee, tea or soda with caffeine after 6:00 p.m. Better yet, give it up altogether. Don't replace one addiction with another. Again, try relaxation or meditation techniques.
Irregularity Add roughage to your diet, such as raw fruit, vegetables, and whole grain cereals. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. And exercise.
Fatigue Take a nap. Try not to push yourself during this time; don't expect too much of your body until it's had a chance to begin to heal itself over a couple of weeks. Don't forget to get plenty of fresh air and moderate exercise.
Hunger Drink water or low-calorie liquids. Eat low-fat, low-calorie snacks. See Snack Calorie Chart.
Tenseness, irritability Take a walk, soak in a hot bath, try relaxation or meditation techniques. Try putting some baking soda and sea salt in your bath, or some aromatherapy bath salts. Or put on your favorite music and sing or dance.
Coughing Sip warm herbal tea. Suck on cough drops, a licorice stick, or sugarless hard candy. Sing!
