A non-smoker, she contracted disease after years of working in smoky restaurants

Heather Crowe quit her job and bought a funeral urn after doctors said she could be dead of inoperable lung cancer within months.

That was two years ago. Crowe, who never smoked a day in her life, worked 12-hour shifts for four decades as a waitress in smoke-filled restaurants in Ottawa, Canda.

She never set out "to go to work to die" so she mustered her remaining strength to travel the country, lobbying for better protection for restaurant workers and promoting smoke-free work environments and public places.
